General Requirements and Information for All Scholarships:
Good academic standing (Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher)
A completed FAFSA application for the academic year in which you are applying (you
are not
required to qualify for financial aid or to accept loans or other financial aid to apply for Counseling program scholarships). For FAFSA information, see:

Students may only apply for one Counseling Program scholarship in any given application window.
Students who are already the recipient of a Counseling Program scholarship are considered ineligible for additional Counseling Program scholarships until their award period has elapsed. Students may not apply for or be awarded concurrent scholarships from the SMU Counseling Program.
Students who are already Counseling Program scholarship recipients are not eligible for additional scholarships for the duration of the award.
Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Please read all eligibility requirements and application forms carefully. Some applications request a brief essay. Applications without the essay will not be accepted.
Scholarships may be revoked due to changes in academic standing, less-than-full-time enrollment (if required), or disciplinary/remediation circumstances.
All scholarship awards are dependent on availability of funds.
Note: All scholarship applications for currently enrolled students must be received
no later than April 15
for the subsequent summer or fall terms.

Aurora Diversity Scholarship:
This $4200 Scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed at least one regular semesters of enrollment in the SMU Counseling Program, and who identifies as a member of an under-represented/marginalized minority group. The award is also based on a proven track record of achievement in the Program based on academic merit, leadership, engagement, and counseling-related professional or volunteer experiences, particularly activities focused on the promotion of diversity in the Counseling Program.
Scholarship Award: $2100 for two semesters
Required enrollment: 6 credit hours
Minimum GPA: Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required in order to continue to receive funds.
School Counselor Scholarship (Covid-19 Response):
This $6300 Scholarship is awarded to a student in the School Counseling Specialty, who has completed at least one regular semester of enrollment in the SMU Counseling Program, and who has been affected financially by the COVID-19 crisis. The award is based on a proven track record of achievement in the Program based on academic merit, leadership, engagement, and counseling-related professional or volunteer experiences. Students receiving the Teach for America tuition discount or the Teacher Tuition Discount are not eligible to apply.
Scholarship Award: $2100 for three semesters
Required enrollment: 6 credit hours for each term
Minimum GPA: Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required in order to continue to receive funds.
Celestial Achievement Scholarship:
This $4200 Scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed at least one regular semesters of enrollment in the SMU Counseling Program, and who has a proven track record of achievement in the Program, based on academic merit, leadership, engagement, and counseling-related professional or volunteer experiences. The Scholarship is primarily merit-based, although financial need may be considered.
Scholarship Award: $2100 for two semesters
Required enrollment: 6 credit hours
Minimum GPA: Minimum GPA of 3.5 is required in order to continue to receive funds.
Nova Summer Scholarship
: This $2100 Scholarship is awarded by the Recruitment and Retention Committee to one student per academic year who demonstrates financial need and academic merit, including GPA, leadership, and service to the Counseling profession. Financial need is demonstrated through the FAFSA application and eligibility for financial aid, as well as through the application essay. This scholarship may
not
be applied to study abroad or SMU-in-Taos courses.

Scholarship Award: $2100 for summer only
Required enrollment: 6 credit hours
Minimum GPA: Minimum GPA of 3.5 is required in order to continue to receive funds.
Discovery Travel Scholarship
: This $500 scholarship assists students who wish to study abroad or at SMU-in-Taos. Up to four awards of $500 each may be made each academic year, depending on availability of funds. Scholarships are applicable to only coursework within the SMU Master of Science in Counseling degree. Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Awards received for one course may be used for a different study abroad/Taos course than originally intended, but must be used in the same academic year indicated in the application. Preference will be given to students who have not received this award previously. Evidence of financial need is not required to apply or to receive the Discovery Travel Scholarship.
